Berrien County Nutrition Department prides itself on providing nutritious, healthy meals to our students. Our mission is to provide the opportunity of a well-balanced healthy meal today for their excellence tomorrow.

 

The School Nutrition Program will assist our students in getting the nutrition they need to learn, grow and develop. Menus must adhere to strict guidelines issued by USDA. Each meal planned must provide the required (USDA) number of food components and meet the nutrient standards for the age/grade group served.  

 

Each cafeteria is equipped with a point of sale system for tracking reimbursable meals and payments. All Berrien County students are assigned a student identification/account number. Students are required to learn their meal number to use at POS station.

 

Previously, all of Berrien County schools offered breakfast and lunch at no charge to all students each day through an option called the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), which is available to some schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program (SBP). 

Berrien Primary School and Berrien Elementary School will continue to operate under CEP, which means that all students at these two schools will be eligible to eat both breakfast and lunch at no cost. 

Due to improved economic conditions, CEP is no longer a viable option for Berrien Middle School and Berrien High School. Berrien Middle School and Berrien High School will continue to offer a healthy breakfast and lunch to students during the school day but will return to the previous system of collecting household applications for households that wish to apply for free or reduced-priced meals for lunch only. Provision 2 breakfast will be in effect so all students will be able to eat breakfast at no cost.

If your child does not qualify for free meals, your child may purchase meals at the reduced price or paid rate, depending on their eligibility status. The lunch meal prices for Berrien Middle School and Berrien High School are as follows:

• Reduced lunch price-$.40
• Paid lunch price-$2.00

To file a program complaint of discrimination, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form, (AD-3027) found online at: http://www.ascr.usda.gov/complaint_filing_cust.html and at any USDA office, or write a letter addressed to USDA and provide in the letter all of the information requested in the form.
